Before we begin in all earnestness to contemplate on the meaning of this stōtra, let us learn a little about its composer Appaṇṇācāryaru, who gave us this gem of a stōtra.

Appaṇṇācāryaru was from Biccāle village which is in the present Raichur district of Karnataka. He was born into the Ātrēya gōtra in a Madhva brāhmaṇa family. His father, Rāmasubbaṇācārya, was a supreme vaidika (scholar and follower of Vedic traditions) and himself a learned scholar. Under his tutelage, he was taught all the scriptures. In the external world, he owned hundreds of acres of land. In addition he had the Jāhagīr(regally gifted ownership) of 28 villages. Internally, he was chock- full of knowledge. His knowledge and scholarship attracted pupils from all corners of the country for pursuit of education.

Leading such a prosperous and progressive life, Appaṇṇācārya, once had the darshana (occasion to call upon in attendance) of Rāghavēndra Swamy who had come to his town, and was immediately impressed with his scholarship, persona and the mystic lore surrounding him. As such he sought to be his disciple for life. Rayaru too was taken in by Appaṇṇācārya’s scholarship, humility and devotion and accepted him as one of his affectionate disciples.

It is to such Appaṇṇācārya that I dedicate this brief verse in gratitude and prayer and seek his guidance in getting the insightful intent of the stōtra.

Foreword:

Śrī Rāghavēndra Stōtra..

A marvellous stōtra that may be regarded as a landmark in the glowing path of poetic traditions and such a one, on merely hearing its very name, it sanctifies the minds and bodies of all good folks. The composer Śrī Appaṇācāryaru, a disciple close to Rayaru’s heart, was an ardent devotee and a learned one at that. Aware of his disciple’s tender heart and his extreme affection towards himself, Rāghavēndra Swamigalu had Appaṇācārya visiting some distant place, on an errand, when it was time to move into the Vr̥ndāvana. The disciple’s mind was, however, inexplicably restive. He could neither express nor experience what tormented him – such was his state. He soon learnt that Rayaru had positioned himself in the Vr̥ndāvana. This was a deadly blow; it was like as if his heart was ripped apart. That his eyes would not sight Rayaru any more, was an incomprehensible truth which dismayed him. He was deeply upset that his guru was forsaking him thus. Disregarding everything else, gripped by a fervent desire for that one last glimpse of his guru, Appaṇācārya retraced his journey back to Man̄cāle, unmindful of any weariness or fatigue. Closer home, he was confronted by a thunderous Tuṅgabhadrā river that was in spate during the rainy season. The agony that Rayaru would vanish from sight was so great, that Appaṇācārya was unmindful of any threat to his own life from the raging river in front. He waded into it, throwing caution to wind, with his mind relentlessly recalling Rayaru’s compassion, without space for any second thoughts. In that resultant overpowering zeal, there streamed forth from his lips, unknown to himself, an exquisite stōtra. (śrīpūrṇabōdha-guru-tīrtha-payōbdhi-pārā) …, this stōtra flooded his mind, overpowering the flooded Tuṅgabhadrā and as he reached the final-destination of the Vr̥ndāvana, everything was over. As the last words streamed from his mouth, “कीर्तिर्दिग्विदिता विभूतिरतुला (kīrtirdigviditā vibhūtiratulā)…" it coincided with the last slab covering the encapsulation of the Vr̥ndāvana and, alongside was the crescendo of the onlookers cries, hailing the completion of the ceremony.

Finally, Appaṇācārya was denied the opportunity to fill his sights with the divine and auspicious form of Rayaru.

That, however, did not dent his fortunes. The stōtra that gushed forth as a vocal stream from his mouth, with utmost devotion, succeeded in washing the feet of Rayaru. Just as such, a disembodied voice helped round off the stōtra’s finish with “साक्षी हयास्योत्रहि…(sākṣī hayāsyōtrahi…).

In turn, all of us too became the beneficiaries of this rare gem of a stōtra.

Perhaps, it may not sound ludicrous if one were to state that apart from ‘Vayustuti’ yet another composition by a Gr̥hastha(a householder or married man), that is chanted even by renowned ascetics, is the Śrī Rāghavēndra Stōtra.

That the contemplation of such a special Stōtra is being attempted by an inconsequential person such as I, is rightfully an endeavour transcending any innate capabilities or merits.

However immature this attempt might sound, I have immense faith that the desire or seed for this action that was sown by that guru, will also help this series reach a meaningful completion. With that trust imbued in me, I have ventured forth to complete this elementary foreword.

For several months though I went on to read several descriptive books however I could not progress even by a small step in this path of contemplation. I concede that it is Rayaru who has led me through this time around.

When I was searching the internet for something, I chanced upon the work of a scholar from Mantralaya (I beg to be forgiven for not being able to get his name or credentials) and the audio recording of Palimārumaṭhādhīśaru - Śrī Vidyādhīśa Tīrtharu covering a talk on the first few slokas of this Stōtra. Thereafter, I was able to read the Kannada translation of our Pūjya guru Shri Bannan̄je Gōvindācāryaru, of this Stōtra and a few Sanskrit analyses. This led to the sprouting of the desire once again to march ahead.

As usual, I have received support and inputs from Shri Prasad while rendering this work into English.  With this I am encouraged to share this offering with all my Bandhus here, after a long hiatus, with all enthusiasm to commence and proceed on this series with affectionate blessings from Rayaru and thereon with the affectionate encouragement from ŚrīHari Vāyu Gurugalu.
