The Philosophy of Acharya Madhwa: Perception and Realisation of Thy’self - Part 3

Living under one roof: A Multidimensional Dependency

Can anyone describe something that does not depend on physics in this universe?

Look at this ecosystem that we live-in, the most interesting part is the “Conjunction” of infinite interactions or events occurring simultaneously at various, points in space, between various infinite communities of living and non-living entities.

This kind of interaction describes the way entities are connected to each other and their effect upon one another. This state of being effectively connected and effected upon, is called ‘Relationship’.

In relationships, mutual trust and interdependence play a major role as interdependence is the key characteristic of the ecosystem. Inter-dependencies between communities exist for a reason; to trigger certain important outcomes.

The degree of inter-dependency in relationship differs between entities where some entities are dependent on others and some are not as dependency is a chain by itself,

·         Humans survive being dependent on earth...
·         Earth nests in the solar system...
·         Solar system finds its address in the Milky Way...
·         Milky Way arises in this universe...
·         The universe houses itself in the very creation...
·         And finally creation identifies itself with the creator!!!

And the creator being the only self-dependent immaterial reality the source of all energy, drives and binds the entire universal eco-system by the application of force to trigger appropriate ‘Transformation & Evolution of Life’ in space & time.

Acharya Madhwa, based on the principle of experience (Anubhava), presented the above concept of spiritual physics formulating therein a multidimensional array interlinking the unique nature & characteristics of realities which exist eternally and are the basis of creation, categorised them into:

Six Dependent Reality (Aswatantra Tattva):

Time (Kaala), Space (Akasha), Sound (Shabda), Atoms (ParamaNu), Soul (Jeeva),
Lakshmi (Prakruti – The Binding Force of Manifestation).

&

One Self-Dependent Reality (Swatantra Tattva):

Bhagavanta [God] (Purushottama - Salvation Force that stands above all that is manifested/ unmanifested)

Acharya Madhwa reiterates the same in Anu-Vyakhyana accordingly

[The primordial nature, the supreme-being: PuruSha, time and Vedas are eternal.
Atoms (basic material cause), time, nature (the inherent characteristic of any existence) and life (Souls) exist, exist always under the control of the Supreme-Being: PuruSha and cannot exist without him.]

Acharya Madhwa Quotes the same through his Geetha Bhashya accordingly

नसतो विद्यते भावो नाभावो विद्यते सत: |
उभयोरपि दृष्टोन्तस्त्वनयोस्तत्वदर्शिभिः ।।Geetha – Ch.2-16।।

।।Acharya Madhwa - Geetha Bhashya ||

[It is noted that soul is imperishable and exists eternally, is that the only one?
Or similarly do other realities exist eternally?

As quoted in Vishnu Purana:
'The primordial nature, the Supreme-being and even time exists eternally'

Bhagavata mentions:
God who is Sath (Physical cause) fabricates this universe by using Asath (Basic Material Cause - Atoms)

Acharya Madhwa confirms the same through his Geetha Bhashya -

अविनाशी तू तद्विद्धि येन सर्वमिदं ततं |
विनाशमव्ययस्यास्य कश्चित् कर्तुमर्हति ।।Geetha – Ch.2-16।।

|| Acharya Madhwa - Geetha Bhashya ||

किं बहुना | यद्देशतोनन्तम् तन्नित्यमेवा वेदाद्यन्य - दापित्याह - अविनाशिथि ||
नापी शापादिना विनाश इत्याह - विनाश मिति || अव्ययम् तत ||

[It’s understood that the permanent realities are the ones which pervade everywhere, Vedas (Sound) and others respectively which are imperishable and follow no destruction even from any curse]

So, Acharya Madhwa proclaims from the above explanation that:

Time (Kaala), Space (Akaasha), Sound (Shabda), Atoms (ParamaNu), Souls (Jeeva), Binding Force (Lakshmi – Prakruti) & Salvation Force (Bhagavanta – PuruSha) are eternally existing in their own subsets parallel from time indefinite to time infinity and also all the above categories are permanent in nature, imperishable and are infinite realties (Ananta tattva’s).

Neither did God a self-dependent reality create all dependent realities nor will they be destroyed. None of the above dependent realities can act independently as they are controlled by creator: PuruSha and cannot exist without him.  “अहं सर्वस्य प्रभावों, मत्तः सर्वं प्रवर्तते

The Philosophy of Acharya Madhwa: Perception and Realisation of Thy’self - Part 2

The Philosophical Hypothesis (Foundation):

Faith is the stepping stone for any foundation and the choice of any noble hypothesis. In any hypothesis, there are no proofs….there are only agreements. The only relevant test to validate any hypothesis is comparison of prediction with experience filled with a fine capacity of discrimination.

It is absolutely essential that one should be neutral and not fall in love with the hypothesis as it does not pretend to be able to prove that there exists God and it equally cannot prove that God is fictional.

It is not easy to convey, unless one has experienced that dramatic feeling of sudden enlightenment that floods the mind when the right idea finally clicks into place through intuition.

Moving ahead, I would say, to pin your hopes upon the future is to consign those hopes to a hypothesis until you find the right one, as you can't prove or disprove any hypothesis, you can only improve upon it.

There are two possible outcomes: if the result confirms the hypothesis, then you've gained a measure of fulfilment. If the result is contrary, then you've made a discovery!

The working hypothesis conceptualised by Acharya Madhwa is in line with Brihadaranyaka Upanishad and is as follows:

आत्मा वा इदं एकैव अग्र आसीत पुरुष: - विदः”
(Before the material world was manifested, the Supreme Being existed)

There exists an eternal self-dependent immaterial reality termed as ‘Creator’ (God)
(Creator is the creative faculty, the energy source a hypocenter & the driving force behind universe)

Creator (PuruSha) eternally exists with his creation (Prakruti) which is also eternal
(Cannot detach the creation from the creator as they are inseparable & exist together)

Creator is the ‘Truth’ himself, full of infinite attributes and void of all defects
(Creator is the everlasting, unchanging – universal constant)

Creator is the blissful embodiment of “Knowledge, Happiness & Light” manifested
(It is the ultimate form to be realised)

God is not a hypothesis derived from logical arguments, but he is faith himself, realised through unbiased penance in the quest for ‘Absolute Truth’ described through insights by many experienced & realised as self-evident as light. He is not something to be sought in the darkness with the light of reason. “He is the only Light”

The Philosophical Postulates (Pillars):

Once the main foundation of working hypothesis is agreed upon and established, it’s time to conceptualise the body and construct the structural pillars of postulates. Testing the hypothesis on the reinforcement of postulates under complex conditions, is always essential, considering that uncertainty in the quest for truth, is a dangerous proposition!

Postulates are often the basic truth of a much larger theory or law, that make sense and is agreed to by everyone to be correct thus useful for creating proofs in the path of Philosophy and are as described below:

There cannot exist two Self-Dependent entities (Swatantra tattva’s) at any given place & time throughout eternity…!!

Only one self-dependent entity exists eternally from indefinite space & time to infinite space & time. Rest all others are just dependent on the first. So, what I mean by the above statement is that for any action either psychological or physical to be executed, it requires a force and such force to perform every action can originate only from an entity that is self-dependent (Swatantra), a dependent entity can neither generate nor regulate the required force to enact any action...which makes sense and is in line with the law of nature. Hence, the cause for every action (psychological or physical) that we experience in this universal existence is sourced from the self-dependent entity that is God (PuruSha – The Source of all Energy) rest others are his eternal dependents....

All entities existing in and out of this universe are ‘Real & Unique’ in nature…..!!

Variability is the law of life, the fundamental principle to be experienced, and is as follows:
- No two entities existing in this universe are alike
- No two things / particles are ever constructed or manufactured alike
- No two behaviour / Patterns / Sound are alike
- No two situations / conditions / activities are alike.

Everything happens for a reason, nothing happens by chance or by mistake or by itself...!!

The cause & effect behind every single event, mechanism, process in this very existence is mathematically driven, calculated, accurate, well-planned and executed, in sync with a specific pattern perfectly designed and set consciously.

‘To err……is human & to excel is divine!’

The Philosophical Theory (Roof):

To theorize is to develop the required body of knowledge that provides "goals, norms, and standards,” isn’t ‘Truth’ the body of knowledge?

Acharya Madhwa Emphasizes:

'To seek truth means to surrender and to surrender means to seek truth.'

The theory propounded by Acharya Madhwa is the ‘Theory of Disambiguation' (Theory of Dharma)

The psychological intention behind every physical action is the measure of ambiguity.
To disambiguate means to ‘Walk the Talk and Talk the Walk’ i.e. remove ambiguities in action and its perception! (ನುಡಿದಂತೆ ನಡೆ...ನಡೆದಂತೆ ನುಡಿ).

The Theory States:
If the psychological Intention behind every physical action is positive & aligns one towards truth its ‘Dharma’ and the same psychological intention when negative and aligns one away from truth is ‘Adharma’

Acharya Madhwa Cautions:

One could be untruthful to this world but never to himself. So, beware!! It’s not a cake walk to walk the path of truth but it’s a walk on the sharp edge of the sword.

Eventually one needs to be selfless, to be unbiased, to be attached but detached at the same time and be sensitive towards the real values of life (Ethics).

In a truth-walk following falsehood is nothing but getting divorced from this very existence, experience and reality its nonetheless lying to one own-self having finally paid for landing and lost in eternity.

Essence of Spiritual Physics:

Falsehood has an infinite combinations hiding for a chance to malign the truth but truth has only one mode of being and it breaths its heart in the Dharma (Roof).

In the journey of Philosophy it is very important to fulfil the objective of life that is attain contentment and it flows by following dharma (Theory of disambiguation). To follow dharma means to be ethical.

The pillars of postulates need to be structured, engineered, reinforced and strongly deep rooted inside the 'Foundation of Hypothesis'. Once pillars are deep-rooted means postulates are understood in-depth visualised in line with spirit of working hypothesis.

Hypothesis is termed as creator (God) - foundation himself, upon whom the entire philosophical castle of Truth and Reality is trusted and erected.

If the conceptualisation of hypothesis about God goes right, it will lead one to truth secured with safety but if the same conceptualisation about God goes wrong, it leads one to falsehood lost in deep danger.

And it is God who is the energy source behind all actions in this universe enabling every existence (living & non-living) into motion through space & time.

Note: If the conceptualisation of any working hypothesis goes wrong, the entire structure of any philosophical castle collapses and comes down in a terrifying crash. Such is the significance, importance and responsibility one needs to have in deriving the right workable hypothesis (Foundation) underscores Acharya Madhwa.

The Philosophy of Acharya Madhwa: Perception and Realisation of Thy’self - Part 1

Introduction

I bet, if perchance, you could find all the mysteries of this universe in someone's hands, how exciting that would be. But, beware, nothing happens until something moves; any magic can only be in those hands that manage the move. But how did that one move weave the strands of this entire universe together into warps and wefts of one garment for us!

The need to understand the fundamentals of this very existence in the universe, was always churning in my mind, for years now. I’ve always tried to seek - what is it that I long for? There was this anxiety in me, to reach the goal of life, which is, to make one’s heart-beat sync with the beats of the universe; to figure out my true identity/ nature that has so far existed in nature eternally and so on.

I started my quest, seeking out that ‘One Hand,’ which might hold all the mysteries of reality & tried to quench my thirst for right knowledge and in my journey, it was Acharya Madhwa who led me to satisfaction in this search for the ‘Truth.’

Acharya Madhwa by himself is a 'Wonder.’
Can any word or combination of words, in existence, aptly describe him?
He stands beyond all design & standards,
He appears beyond all tradition & conventions,
Finally, is universally embraced even beyond human thought.

If so, how can he be described at all?

I feel Acharya Madhwa is ‘As simple as such,’ (ಆಚಾರ್ಯ ಮಧ್ವರು - ಸಹಜ ಮತ್ತು ಸರಳ) and see him as he was and is 'The way of our life'

The contributions of Acharya Madhwa to Indian Philosophy are innumerable but I wish to summarise and present here, the ones that fascinated me the most and which I felt were unique, in terms of balancing the vast breadth and great depths with gumption for innovation.

And this is the way I have perceived....

● Anubhava Vaada: Experience the Existence of Eternal Reality....

● Swabhava Vaada: Law of Evolution & Transformation….

● Tattva Vaada: State of Awareness....

Now let us step into each of these to see what they open out into -

v  Anubhava Vaada: Experience the Existence of Eternal Reality

Acharya Madhwa was the first to create a foundational platform (Panchanga) of basic philosophical hypothesis based on the principle of experience (Anubhava), built the, if I may say so, foundational platform of ‘Spiritual Physics’ Upon this platform arose the philosophical castle, autonomy & coherence in nature.

The primary focus of the philosophical theories or conclusions, propounded by Acharya Madhwa were broad conceptual frameworks that served to eradicate false beliefs which led to misinterpreting the truth (Vedas) and disprove the theory of illusion, which was widely prevalent during his time.

He fortified philosophical concepts, such that when subjected to any inquiry, it had to be capable of being validated from the benchmark of truth (Vedas) which could be referenced, should a need arise, to settle any disagreements.

He also ensured that the thought processes behind these concepts, were well within the reach of ordinary people, so as to encourage them to pursue the path of truth.

In his viewpoint, philosophy is the guiding principle for judging any behavioural pattern in this existence and he laid stress on methodology seasoned through experience, rather than mere acquisition of knowledge, that became theoretical in context.

With the above subtleties, let’s reach out to Acharya Madhwa, seeking the support of his guiding hands, let’s mark the beginning of a new journey to understand & experience this fascinating existence of being eternal…….

Inquisitiveness: A curious path towards truth

My experience says 'I' am the epicentre of this universe because if 'I' exist everything exists with reference to me; but, on the contrary, life ceases to exist even after 'I' walk away in time. Which really does trigger the possibility of the existence of a hypocentre to ponder upon.

With the term hypocentre ringing in my ears, when I just look at life, the first thing I’m dumbstruck with - how magnificent and big is this Universe! Which is continuously creating and manifesting countless life forms, as they seem to be gleefully enjoined, in a dance of coming into being and destruction.

So, what makes this Universe (an art of true perfection) to sustain and manage its existence over years? Trust me! Nothing exists or happens, by itself, by chance or by mistake, because it’s only 'pleasure in a job' that brings out perfection in the work.

If I am not wrong, for me it’s all about 'becoming' perfect and it means to transform and evolve matured every day, as perfection is a journey to attain completeness with contentment.

But, look at the stars, and things down at your feet level, existing from time immemorial.
Do they not portray a sense of excellence in their composition and constitution?
I am sure you too would doubt that the perfectness in them would have emerged from an imperfect or ‘inert-matter-action’ paradigm! Never can it be...!

The term perfection is normally associated with the existence of a creative faculty personified and filled with attributes such as pleasure, sense of art, divinity, individuality, intuition, analysis, balance, passion & construction.

When I say perfection personified, it may be inferred as perfection existing in the form of being content & divine.

So, from the above analogy - if the hypocenter, could be that perfection personified creative faculty, the source of all creation and manifestation, then this universe too is born as a true reflection of that real perfection indeed.

Spiritual Physics:

A hypocenter as creative faculty, universe a reflection & personifying perfection; sounds dramatic, doesn’t it?

A drama is a specific mode of narrative, typically fictional but life is all about truth as it narrates experience through existence; this in turn is helpful for us to shake off illusion.

Illusion means to believe in a false idea, nurturing it to deliver deceptive explanations, with the sole objective of misinterpreting the perceptions gained from sensory experiences. Eventually disrespecting the very existence of this universe.

How then can we know that this experience offered by life, is the right one?

Good question, but is it not right to be truthful to ourselves at this very moment? As I see, we all are striving hard, every single second, not to be deceived, to shed misconceptions, not to be misled or also, taken for granted. Don’t these gestures or actions prompt the process of dismissing falsehood from within us?!

Yes, experience is all about overcoming illusions by dismissing falsehood, acknowledging truth through accepting and respecting the very existence of this universe.

To acknowledge the truth means to gain knowledge about the truth, by observing events, gathering facts and the reality is, there can be no knowledge without a knower, a known or knowable object.

When I say “Knowable object" the one that is to be known is the "Knowledge of Nature" and that is Physics - it is the natural science that involves the study of the application of 'force' on objects from the existing phenomena called 'energy,' which drives the capability to do some 'work on matter,' thereby enabling its motion through 'space and time.'

But what is Spiritual in Physics?

Spirituality is centred around, and embraces the idea of, an ‘alleged’ ultimate creative faculty indeed a divine immaterial reality.

Acharya Madhwa’s Viewpoint:

Spiritual Physics is all about that inquisitive quest in search of that 'Energy Source', the phenomena, the cause from where it ‘generates’ the capability to do any work by the application of force enabling this very existence of life (universe) into motion through space & time….

This inquisitive quest is only for the reason that - No one knows who wrote the laws of physics or how do they exist from time immemorial, science is based on testable, reproducible evidence and so far there is no evidence about testing the universe.

When there exists no evidence to understand the behaviour of this universe, where then is the clue for understanding the existence of that ‘One Creative faculty – The Source of all Energy,’ that we have been discussing hitherto, which stands shadowed within this natural existence….?!

Its real difficult trying to understand the way nature works as it involves the most terrible test; the test of the ability called human reasoning.

From a drop of water a logician might infer the possibility of the existence of an ocean, without having seen or heard of one; but, the point is not how logical the inference is, it’s all about how appealing & convincing is the inference, when explained.

As conviction is always gained through experience and not through abstraction, it means conviction is worthless unless converted to conduct and it is the degree of conviction to oneself that brings satisfaction to life.

For the philosophical explanation to be more convincing with an objective of attaining fulfilment & contentment (satisfaction) within the scope of the evidence available, let’s understand three elements of the ‘Philosophical Castle’ –

The Hypothesis (Foundation), The Postulate (Pillar) & The Theory (Roof)...

As a starting point for further introspection, lets Visualise this philosophy as a castle, where hypothesis to be the foundational platform upon which the pillars of postulates are raised with one end reinforced deep-rooted inside the foundation (hypothesis) and the other end raised sky high to hold the roof that is the theory.

For the roof (theory) to remain unaltered and approved, the pillars (postulates) must remain strong and tethered to the foundation of hypothesis as it deserves the highest focus and attention to detail; remember your entire castle sits on top of this foundation! If you skimp here and something fails, it’s not an easy fix. So, it’s important to ensure that the foundation is built to the very best standards possible.
